Children and teens aren’t the only ones who can benefit from orthodontics. Adult braces and other orthodontic treatments are becoming more and more common, with adults currently making up about 25% of orthodontic patients. It’s never too late to take advantage of the orthodontic treatment Thacker Orthodontics offers to correct crooked or crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, incorrect jaw position, jaw disorders, or even just to give you the smile you’ve always wanted!
Have you ever considered having your teeth straightened but feel like you might be too old for that now? Are you unhappy with your smile but aren’t sure if braces are for you? Are you finding it increasingly difficult over the years to keep your teeth clean and your gums healthy? If you answered yes to any of these questions, adult orthodontics may be beneficial to you. Take a look below to learn a little more about what orthodontics are, and what Thacker Orthodontics has to offer our adult patients.
What are orthodontics? What does an orthodontist do?
Orthodontics focus on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities. If left untreated, many of these problems can worsen. They can contribute to abnormal wear and tear on the surface of your teeth, affect chewing function, or cause excess stress on the gum tissue and bone which can result in headaches or pain in the face or the neck.
Orthodontists like Dr. Jim and Dr. MaryEvan are fully qualified dentists who have also completed years of highly specialized training in identifying and correcting bite corrections. An orthodontist is able to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile. By choosing the proper dental specialist to diagnose and treat your orthodontic issues, you’re giving your smile all the care and attention it needs to shine.
What should you expect from an orthodontist?
Dr. Jim and Dr. MaryEvan will always take note of your concerns, and outline all the treatment options for you, as well as discuss any risks along with benefits. They’ll take the time to explain the different orthodontic treatment options available to you, along with an estimate of how long each treatment may take. They will also explain any other procedures required for treatment, the stability of the final result, and give you a written treatment plan and fee estimate where appropriate.
What will happen at your first appointment?
Thacker Orthodontics is happy to offer a complimentary consultation with us that will give you the chance to meet our team, learn more about orthodontics, receive a complete initial exam, and find out which treatment options will best meet your needs. During your initial consultation, we will:
- Review your dental and medical history forms, including a medical and dental history
- Provide a complete clinical exam to determine whether treatment is necessary
- Obtain digital study models of the teeth, photos of your face and teeth, and digital x-rays in order to create a customized treatment plan
- Discuss all financial information, insurance options, and payment plans
These records are not only necessary for customizing a treatment plan for you, they are also helpful in tracking the progress of your teeth as they move under orthodontic care. We will also gladly answer any questions you may have, and will provide all the information you need to determine which, if any, treatment is right for you.
What orthodontic treatments are currently available?
There’s a wide choice of orthodontic options for patients of all ages, including:
Traditional metal braces – these are the most common and well-known braces. Made of high-quality stainless steel, modern metal braces are more comfortable and lighter weight than they used to be.
Ceramic braces – these function in much the same way traditional braces do, but they come in a white or tooth-colored ceramic material, making them a more subtle choice than metal brackets.
Lingual braces – also these similar to metal braces, these are placed out of sight on the back of the teeth, for an almost invisible straightening experience.
Invisalign aligners – these removable clear plastic trays are custom-made to fit over your teeth and gently move them into the desired positions over time.
Every option has its pros and cons, and not every treatment will be suitable for all patients. For example, Invisalign is often not an option for a patient who has severe dental issues, and works best with less complicated problems. An experienced orthodontist like Dr. Jim or Dr. MaryEvan will work with you to find the treatment that helps you feel your best and provides the very best results for your specific case.
How long does treatment normally last?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The time required to correct any particular orthodontic problem will depend on the severity and specifics of the problem. Average treatment time tends to be anywhere from 24 months to 36 months, but could be longer or shorter. Thacker Orthodontics may not be able to give you a concrete answer to how long you’ll need to wear braces or Invisalign aligners, but rest assured we will only recommend the treatment we think best fits you, your smile, and your lifestyle!
How often will I need to see the orthodontist?
Regular follow-up appointments are an important part of your orthodontic treatment, and should be scheduled for every four to eight weeks. These tend to take about 15-45 minutes. Our regular office hours are Monday to Thursday 8-5. We offer a later day on alternating Mondays where appointments may be available as late as 6:30. Patients are seen by appointment only. Our team will always work with you to ensure your appointments are as convenient as possible. When making your appointments, let us know what days and times work best for you, and we’ll do all we can to schedule you during that time.
