Thacker Orthodontics is your Cincinnati Invisalign expert

As our most popular alternative to traditional braces, the Invisalign system is an excellent option if you’re looking for orthodontic treatment that offers you more freedom and flexibility while straightening your smile. As Cincinnati Invisalign experts, Dr. Jim and Dr. MaryEvan are able to use this clear aligner system to correct misaligned bites and other oral issues in a virtually undetectable way. Invisalign can give you the same beautiful results as traditional braces, but without all the brackets, bands, and wires that come with them.

How does treatment from our Cincinnati Invisalign experts work?

Your Invisalign treatment will begin with x-rays, pictures, and digital impressions. These will give us a comprehensive 3D image of your smile and bite, which our doctors will use to develop a customized treatment plan for you. This plan will include all the movements we want your teeth to make, as well as an estimated treatment time. Using this 3D image, we may even be able to give you a sneak peek of what your new smile will look like!

After we’ve developed an individualized treatment plan for you, a series of custom aligners will be made specifically for your smile. Invisalign aligners may appear to have a simple design, but the smooth plastic trays are actually constructed of a special thermoplastic resin that is strong enough to move teeth into alignment. When worn as directed by our Cincinnati Invisalign experts, Invisalign aligners can be just as effective as traditional braces at treating many common orthodontic issues.

Your very first aligner will be a slightly straighter version of your current smile. Invisalign aligners completely cover the teeth, but they are so comfortable that it will only take a short time to get used to them. Turns out that’s a good thing, because aligners must be worn 20-22 hours every day throughout the course of treatment in order to work properly. In general, they should only be removed to eat, drink anything other than water, and to brush and floss. The Invisalign system depends on patient compliance! If you don’t wear your aligners as recommended by our doctors, you won’t get the results you desire.

You’ll be responsible for changing out your aligners every 1-2 weeks. Each subsequent aligner will be a slightly straighter version of the last. This is what allows your teeth to gently shift into a perfectly aligned, beautifully functional smile over time.

How long will your Cincinnati Invisalign treatment last?

We’ll schedule follow-up appointments for you in our office every 6-10 weeks or so to check your progress and ensure your treatment is staying on track. Because every patient responds to treatment in their own way, so there’s no “one-size-fits-all” answer for how long you’ll need to wear aligners, but the average total treatment time with Invisalign usually averages 9-15 months. The number of aligners worn during treatment tends to be between 18 and 30, but both of these figures will vary from case to case.

What advantages does treatment with our Cincinnati Invisalign experts have over traditional braces?

One of the biggest benefits of Invisalign is its invisibility factor, but the system also has a number of other advantages over traditional braces. Two of the most popular are:

No food restrictions

Patients in braces have to steer clear of any foods that are too crunchy or too chewy in order to protect their brackets, wires, and bands. This means snacks like popcorn, many raw fruits and veggies, and most chips and candies are off the table until treatment is complete. This can be frustrating even if the end results are totally worth it. Because Invisalign aligners are removable and designed to be taken out every time you eat, you’re still free to enjoy all your favorite foods!

Easier to maintain

Good oral hygiene is especially important when you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. If you’re in braces, this can sometimes be tricky, particularly in the early days. Food particles and other debris can get trapped in all the nooks and crannies, which increases the chance of tooth decay and cavities. However, Invisalign makes it easy to keep your teeth free of plaque and bacteria! Aligners are removed before you begin your regular routine, so you’re free to brush and floss the same way you always have. Cleaning the actual aligner is a simple process, too! There are special kits designed specifically to clean Invisalign aligners, or you can gently clean them with nothing more than denture crystals and a soft toothbrush.

Flexibility and freedom

Do you participate in sports regularly? Play a wind instrument? Do you have a special event like a wedding or prom coming up? Invisalign is fantastic for patients who occasionally need a little freedom from their treatment. Aligners can be removed prior to practice or a game, and replaced with a mouthguard to keep your mouth and teeth protected, and removing them before band class or a concert means nothing comes between you and your music-making. For senior pictures, homecoming, or even something as simple as work ID photos, you can take your aligners out temporarily, allowing nothing but your natural smile to show through.

Who is a good candidate for Cincinnati Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign is most effective for mild to moderate cases of the most common orthodontic issues. Although many problems can be successfully corrected with Invisalign, there are some cases that may be severe or complex enough that they require more precise tooth control than a removable aligner can achieve. Dr. Jim and Dr. MaryEvan will be able to will determine if Invisalign would be a good fit for your specific issues, or if a more traditional orthodontic approach would be better.
